Skim

I really like "reading" graphic novels like Swim. I put reading in quotes because it doesn't feel like I am just skimming a chapter book, I feel as if Im more interested in the plot/dialogue. I honestly do not think I would be able to read this if it were without the pictures because it adds a lot more to the story and you can picture what is actually happening. By seeing how Skim dresses/who her friends are/ and her mannerisms and attitude you can tell more from a graphic novel instead of being told someones characteristics. I think its interesting to compare the different diary books we read in how the messages seem different in how they are told (recipes/ graphics).

The botton picture is of a super skinnnnyyy model and the top picture is one of a "plus size model". Funny how that plus size model looks more attractive.... By giving her the title of plus size model it already makes her look inferior to the 90 pound model in the bottom picture! What is our society doing these days???

Kinky

I thought the section "Marriage" was funny because it is an institution girls look forward to ever since they were little. Most girls can imagine what their wedding day will look like with our "prince charming". I thought it was interesting that the poem discusses Barbie having thoughts of other men, besides Ken. The men described are ones who you would not picture as "price charming" but rather an everyday man....certainly not good enough for Barbie!

spun with fuzz, not stiff
like the arcs of a plastic Jello mold.
Another chubby and balding
with John Lennon glasses."

I Shall Be Released-cover song

I chose the song "I shall be released" that was originally done by Bob Dylan. Although a lot of artists have attempted to redo this song, I think Jack Johnson does the best cover of this song. Jack Johnson's cover to this song is more meaningful to me because Jack is my favorite artist. I have seen him in concert twice and every time I hear his voice it brings back so many awesome memories. My dad introduced me to Jack Johnson when I was in grade school and ever since then his music has been a big part of our family. I think most people like this cover because he is a newer, younger artist so more people can relate to him! I think his solos sound better too.

Also because my family is very musical I have heard my brothers and dad play this song ever since I could remember. Therefore, I have a strong bond to this song!!!

This is the Jack Johnson version...

magazines designed for women

Opps! I wrote this a week ago, but it was kept as a draft!!! :[

I think women are portrayed as incompetent, compulsive, and self centered when reading popular magazines like Cosmo And Glamour. I do not think is a realistic or fair portrayal of how women really are/think. However, unfortunately, these companies are still selling magazines and women everyday continue to base some part of their lives on the article. Even if you say you do not agree or believe with the topics/opinions of the magazine, if you purchase it, you are encouraging them.

Cosmo and Glamour are filled with articles/advertisements encouraging young adults to loose weight, look glamorous, and ways to please men (sexually and emotionally). These magazines write articles about being confident and loving your body, but then push us to think that we need to be a certain weight or jean size. Who dictates this potential weight? I do not get it. I think the prettiest people are those who show it inside and out and this is NOT dependent on what size jeans you wear. People need to grow up and learn that there is more to life than judging people for being too fat or too skinny.

Bridget Jones

Before reading the book, I had never seen the movie! So I was really excited to finally see it! Especially because my name is Bridget and when I meet someone the common response is always "ohhh Bridget Jones?" Yeah that gets old!

But anyway, I think the movie did a good job of representing the events that occured in the book. Obviously, certain things were more exaggerating in the movie to add for comical relief and dramatic effects. I think the book did a better job of showing how crazy Bridget is with her weight. In the movie, Bridget looks like a normal adult size, but in the book she is described as someone thinner. Also, I think the book does a better job of showing how bad of a "boyfriend" Daniel is. Creating a movie from a book is hard to do;however, I think it was well executed in this case.
